The Village of Love in Saskatchewan is looking to become a unique wedding destination by embracing its name and promoting love in every way possible. With a population of 72, the village had received numerous requests from couples looking to tie the knot in Love. In response, the village decided to build a new wedding chapel to cater to these requests and fully promote the passion in their namesake. Through hard work, donations, and fundraising, the village was able to refurbish an old Canadian Pacific Railway bunkhouse into a beautiful wedding chapel, complete with a steeple housing a donated Canadian National Railway bell.
The history of Love dates back to the early 1930s when families sought refuge from the Great Depression and established the village with sawmills, homesteads, and various businesses. The village’s name has two origin stories, one involving a young couple at a mill, and the other attributing the name to the first train conductor, Tom Love. Despite the decline of the lumbering industry and subsequent population decrease, the love for Love has always remained. With the help of dedicated individuals with family connections to the area, the village has seen a resurgence in recent years, with the population increasing and community events being held.
The project to build the wedding chapel in Love cost over $65,000, but the village believes it is worth every penny to promote love and attract couples looking to exchange vows in a unique setting. The chapel, which can seat 50 people, has already hosted one wedding, and another is scheduled for May. Despite financial challenges, such as needing to replace the roof of the local hall at a cost of $100,000, the village remains dedicated to celebrating love. The idea of a honeymoon suite, stone walkway, and other romantic spots is on hold until funds can be raised, but the community is determined to make it happen.
The Love post office has become a hub for love-related activities, with the postmistress, Connie Black, receiving letters from around the world requesting a special Love stamp for wedding invites, Valentine cards, and love notes. The village takes pride in playing a role in so many love stories and has received letters from various places worldwide. Despite the challenges and financial hurdles, the village is committed to maintaining its reputation as a place where love is celebrated and couples can create lasting memories. With the support of the community and individuals dedicated to preserving the village’s history and promoting its future as a wedding destination, Love is poised to become a beacon of love and romance in Saskatchewan.
