National Geographic has released stunning footage of baby penguins bravely taking a 50-foot dive into the water below. Nearly 700 emperor penguin chicks are seen gathered at the edge of a cliff, hesitating before one brave penguin takes the plunge, followed closely by the others. This rare event was captured by a drone at Atka Bay on the Ekström Ice Shelf in Antarctica for the documentary series “Secrets of the Penguins,” executive produced by James Cameron. Bertie Gregory, an award-winning National Geographic cinematographer, spent two months alongside the colony to capture this incredible moment.

The footage shows the penguin chicks making their first swim in the Southern Ocean after traveling to the ocean every January. Their path to the water was blocked by a 50-foot drop, forcing them to jump off the ice cliff. Despite the danger of falling onto chunks of ice in the water, the chicks were surprisingly able to swim and navigate the ocean. This moment of the baby penguins’ first swim was captured on film, showcasing a never-before-seen event that has fascinated scientists but was unknown to television audiences until now.

James Cameron, the executive producer of “Secrets of the Penguins,” called the footage “truly incredible” in an Instagram post. The documentary series will premiere on Earth Day 2025 on National Geographic and Disney+. Bertie Gregory, the cinematographer who captured the moment, expressed his excitement about potentially seeing something new and unique while filming the penguins. He highlighted the courage of the penguin chicks as they bravely jumped off the ice cliff, embarking on their first swim in the Southern Ocean.

The penguin chicks at Atka Bay were observed by scientists in a behavior that had never been captured on television before. Each chick took the daring dive into the water below, demonstrating their bravery and resilience. Despite the initial fear of falling onto chunks of ice in the water, the chicks were able to swim and navigate successfully. The moments captured on film showcase the natural instincts and determination of the baby penguins as they embark on this important milestone in their lives.

In the documentary series “Secrets of the Penguins,” viewers will have the opportunity to witness the breathtaking moment of the baby penguins taking their first swim. The footage provides a glimpse into the lives of these fascinating creatures and the challenges they face in their natural habitat. This rare and unique behavior of the penguin chicks has been beautifully captured by National Geographic, allowing audiences to appreciate the wonders of nature and the resilience of these remarkable animals. The release of this footage offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a moment that has previously only been seen by scientists in the field.
