Seattle Public Schools testing new AI software from startup for students and educators

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) recently introduced new software from MagicSchool AI, a company that provides generative AI tools to assist teachers in creating lesson plans and student feedback. The software also offers tools for students to enhance learning and teach responsible AI use. With resources available to introduce the new programs, SPS plans to implement MagicSchool software for both teachers and students. The company, founded by former principal and teacher Adeel Khan, is already used by over 2,500 school and district partners, offering more than 60 tools powered by AI models from various sources.

Artificial intelligence technology is becoming more prevalent in education, with some backlash against tools like ChatGPT that can automatically generate content. Dr. Michael Starosky, assistant superintendent of academics at SPS, expressed the need to explore the potential benefits of MagicSchool AI in enhancing student learning while maintaining a focus on fostering student creativity. MagicSchool AI aims to support educators by providing a faster and more affordable option compared to other AI products marketed to educators, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot.

The company ensures compliance with federal laws governing student privacy and moderates content for students using its models. MagicSchool offers a chatbot named Raina that can answer questions related to instructional approaches and behavior management for both teachers and students. While initial concerns about AI tools being used for plagiarism and cheating have been raised, recent research suggests that these worries are not materializing. SPS made ChatGPT available for students this past fall, emphasizing access to transformative technology while still advising caution due to privacy and access concerns.

There are ongoing debates about the ethical implications of using AI in education, including the use of AI grading essays and concerns about deepfakes, misinformation, and plagiarism. Despite these issues, some educators believe that AI can inspire creativity and positively impact how students approach their work and thinking. Washington state has issued a roadmap to guide educators, students, and families in utilizing AI in public schools, emphasizing the importance of preparing students and educators to use these tools responsibly, ethically, and safely.

SPS has established guiding AI principles, focusing on protecting academic integrity, human-centered approaches, and mitigating bias. The district acknowledges the potential benefits of AI tools while also recognizing the importance of being mindful of their limitations and risks. Critical thinking skills are encouraged when evaluating work produced by AI tools, as the information provided may be biased, inaccurate, or incomplete. As the use of AI in education continues to grow, educators are encouraged to embrace the potential benefits while also remaining vigilant about the ethical implications and potential risks associated with these technologies.
