Exclusive: Inside a B-52 Bomber Mission Near China’s Borders

CNN was granted exclusive access to a 33-hour mission on a Boeing B-52H Stratofortress, one of America’s primary strategic bombers. The flight, known as MYLAR11, covered over 13,000 miles from the continental US to the North Pacific Ocean, down by China and North Korea, and back home in a block of airspace off the Korean Peninsula. The B-52 has been in service since the 1950s and remains a symbol of American air power, offering a mobile element of America’s nuclear deterrent known as the nuclear triad.

The crew on MYLAR11 consisted of three pilots, three weapon systems officers, and one electronic warfare officer. Despite the cramped conditions on the jet and the challenging nature of the mission, which included four aerial refuelings, the crew managed to stay focused through casual conversations, rest periods, and snacks. They also had to navigate around airspace near North Korea, where earlier in the year, Chinese fighter jets had engaged in an ‘unsafe intercept’ with a B-52 bomber. The crew remained alert as they were accompanied by allied fighters from Japan and South Korea.

As the B-52 made its way back home, the crew faced another challenge as the caution light on engine 5 began flashing. The crew calmly shut down the engine, showcasing the redundancy and reliability of the aircraft. Despite its age and legacy status, the B-52 is still considered a formidable aircraft with multiple backup systems. The crew managed to land safely after 33 hours and were faced with yet another challenge as the right main gear failed to extend. However, the crew successfully landed the aircraft using an emergency procedure.

The US Air Force is planning to upgrade the B-52H to newer B-52J models, which will include more efficient engines, upgraded avionics, and new radars. This modernization program is aimed at keeping the B-52 flying for nearly a century since its initial service in the mid-1950s. Despite the advancements in stealth bombers like the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider, the B-52’s proponents argue that it still has a role to play in the future due to its adaptability and versatility.

Throughout the flight, the crew of MYLAR11 displayed resilience, teamwork, and professionalism as they navigated through challenging conditions and potential threats. The B-52 may be an older aircraft, but it continues to evolve with the times, ensuring that it remains a vital component of America’s air power projection. The successful completion of this 33-hour mission showcased the capabilities and durability of the B-52, cementing its status as a crucial asset in the US military’s arsenal.
