Prosecutors: Idaho man charged with federal terrorism for planning church attack in support of IS

An 18-year-old man, Alexander Scott Mercurio, was arrested by federal prosecutors in northern Idaho for plotting to attack churches using a metal pipe, butane fuel, a machete, and his father’s guns, with the intention of supporting the Islamic State group. Mercurio, who adopted the Muslim faith against his Christian parents’ wishes, was in contact with FBI informants posing as Islamic State group supporters. He planned to incapacitate his father, steal his guns, and carry out the attack in Coeur d’Alene, as detailed in a sworn statement by FBI task force officer John Taylor II. Authorities believe he planned to carry out the attack the day after his arrest, but messages left for his relatives and defense attorneys were not immediately returned.

Mercurio intended to use rifles, handguns, and ammunition kept in a locked closet by his father, but was prepared to attack with the pipe, fire, and knives if he couldn’t access the firearms. He communicated with informants about his plans and shared audio recordings and photos in front of the IS flag holding a knife, signaling his allegiance to the extremist group. Mercurio expressed his desire to carry out attacks on multiple churches in town and to achieve martyrdom in the process. Over a two-year period, he conversed with confidential informants and tried to build an explosive vest for the attacks, displaying a deep-rooted commitment to his extremist beliefs.

Mercurio’s radicalization began during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools were closed, and he was drawn to the extremist ideology of the Islamic State. Despite his parents’ disapproval of his beliefs, he continued to communicate with informants, expressing his desire to die for the cause of Allah and carry out acts of violence. Authorities arrested him after he sent an audio file pledging his allegiance to IS, preventing him from acting on his plan. Attorney General Merrick Garland commended the FBI’s efforts in taking Mercurio into custody and charged him with attempting to support ISIS’s mission of terror and violence. If convicted, Mercurio could face up to 20 years in prison.

The Islamic State group, which rose to power in Syria and Iraq in 2014 before being largely defeated on the battlefield by 2018, still maintains a presence in desert hideouts in the Middle East. Its regional affiliates operate in various countries, including Afghanistan, West Africa, and the Far East, carrying out attacks and spreading terror. IS recently claimed responsibility for a deadly attack at a Moscow concert hall that resulted in the deaths of 145 people, marking one of the deadliest attacks in Russia in years. As Mercurio awaits his first court appearance in northern Idaho, the case sheds light on the ongoing threat of extremist ideologies and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to prevent acts of terrorism on US soil.

The arrest of Alexander Scott Mercurio highlights the challenges faced by authorities in identifying and addressing individuals radicalized by extremist ideologies, such as the Islamic State group. Despite his young age, Mercurio had developed a deep commitment to carrying out violent attacks in support of his beliefs, showcasing the influence and danger posed by online radicalization and recruitment efforts. The case underscores the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to prevent individuals from being drawn into terrorist activities and to safeguard communities from potential threats. The swift action taken by law enforcement in this instance prevented a potentially devastating attack and serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to counter extremist propaganda and recruitment efforts.

The Department of Justice’s commitment to pursuing and holding accountable those who would commit acts of terrorism against the United States is essential in maintaining national security and safeguarding the country from external threats. The case of Alexander Scott Mercurio serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by individuals radicalized by extremist ideologies, regardless of their background or circumstances. As the investigation continues and Mercurio faces legal proceedings, the focus remains on preventing and disrupting acts of terrorism, protecting lives, and upholding the values of a free and secure society. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and intelligence services are crucial in addressing current and emerging threats, ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals within the nation.
