Warner Bros. hints at sequel for ‘Joker’, ‘Beetlejuice 2’ and other films at CinemaCon

Warner Bros. set the stage for a record-breaking 2024 with a lineup that includes highly anticipated films such as “Furiosa,” a prequel to the Mad Max franchise, Kevin Costner’s two-part Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga,” the “Beetlejuice” sequel, and “Joker: Folie à Deux” featuring Lady Gaga in Gotham City. The studio showcased stars like Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Chris Hemsworth at the annual CinemaCon convention, along with exclusive footage and trailers for upcoming films. Director Todd Phillips teased the audience with a trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux” and addressed rumors about the sequel being a musical.

George Miller, director of the upcoming “Furiosa,” introduced the film starring Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth, focusing on a young Furiosa’s journey portrayed by Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The film explores themes of hope and resilience, with Hemsworth playing a warlord named “Dementus.” Kevin Costner also spoke about his two-part Western film, “Horizon: An American Saga,” set during the Civil War and premiering at Cannes next month. Costner emphasized the notion of the American promise and the sacrifices made in pursuit of it, with the ensemble cast delivering a compelling narrative.

Tim Burton hyped up the return of “Beetlejuice” with the upcoming sequel featuring original cast members and new characters, set to release in September. Burton shared his excitement for revisiting the Deetz family over the years, with Keaton describing the sequel as great. Director Bong Joon-ho presented a trailer for “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson, a film about an unconventional hero’s journey set for a 2025 release. Warner Bros. is also revamping its DC superhero universe, with a new “Superman” film in the works under the supervision of Peter Safran and James Gunn.

Warner Bros. continues to strengthen its presence in the movie theater ecosystem, following a strategy shift from releasing films day-and-date on its streaming service back to traditional theatrical releases. The studio’s recent box office successes with films like “Wonka,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Godzilla x Kong” have demonstrated their commitment to big, crowd-pleasing event movies. Warner Bros. made an unconventional move in December by releasing three major films in quick succession, in response to the demand from theater owners and audiences for more content.

As Warner Bros. looks ahead to a blockbuster-filled 2024, the studio’s diverse lineup spanning genres like action, Westerns, sequels, and superhero films indicates a commitment to engaging storytelling and creating memorable cinematic experiences. With a mix of established franchises and new projects featuring A-list talent, Warner Bros. is poised to capture the attention of audiences worldwide and solidify its position as a major player in the film industry. The studio’s ambitious plans for the future reflect a dedication to innovation and creativity, ensuring that Warner Bros. remains at the forefront of Hollywood’s ever-evolving landscape.
