Video shows Chicago police firing nearly 100 shots in 41 seconds during fatal traffic stop

A recent incident in Chicago involving plainclothes police officers firing nearly 100 gunshots during a traffic stop has resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Black man named Dexter Reed. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability released body-worn camera footage that showed Reed firing first, injuring an officer, before being shot at by four more officers. Police initially described the incident as an “exchange of gunfire,” but the newly released videos offer a more detailed perspective of what transpired. Family members of Reed have questioned the reasons for the traffic stop and are demanding answers and justice.

The video footage shows the officers surrounding Reed’s vehicle and yelling commands for him to exit, with profanity laced instructions. Gunshots erupt, and Reed is seen exiting the vehicle and falling to the ground as officers continue to fire. Reed’s family members, who remember him as a talented high school basketball player with aspirations of becoming a sports broadcaster, are emotionally distraught and devastated by his death. They are calling for the firing of the officers involved and for a thorough investigation into the incident, which they claim was unconstitutional.

The family’s attorney, Andrew Stroth, emphasized the need for swift action to ensure that similar incidents do not happen in the future. Although the police department is cooperating with the investigation, the family and community members are demanding accountability and transparency. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has vowed to conduct a full investigation into the shooting and emphasized the need for transparency in such cases. He expressed personal devastation over the loss of another young Black man in an interaction with the police.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while investigations are ongoing. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office will determine whether the officers’ use of force was justified or if criminal charges are warranted. The medical examiner’s office classified Reed’s death as a homicide, attributing it to multiple gunshot wounds. This incident has reignited discussions about police reform, racial bias, and the use of excessive force within the Chicago Police Department.

The release of the video footage by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability is part of an effort to be more transparent and address past mistakes of withholding or delaying information. The oversight agency was created in 2016 following the controversy surrounding the shooting of Laquan McDonald by a police officer. The incident has highlighted the ongoing challenges of implementing police reform and ensuring compliance with court-supervised reform plans. The investigation into the shooting of Dexter Reed will be guided by evidence, facts, and the law, with a focus on pursuing justice for his family and the community.
