‘The Community Spoke, and We Listened’: Popular NYC Eatery Reopens Inside Bike Shop in Response to Local Requests

Brothers Jermaine, Paul, and Johann Burrowes have recently reopened their Prospect Lefferts Gardens restaurant, MangoSeed, serving up Caribbean fare after intense community pressure. Originally opened in 2008, MangoSeed quickly became a local favorite for its unique menu offerings, creating a sense of community in a neighborhood dominated by takeout joints. The pandemic prompted the brothers to close the restaurant after 17 years and focus on their successful Burrowes Brothers Bikes shop, which opened in the same year in a nearby storefront.

Paul Burrowes, head chef for both MangoSeed and the bike shop, emphasized the brothers’ passion for teaching people about biking and providing them with the best equipment and knowledge. While the bike shop was thriving, loyal MangoSeed customers began demanding the restaurant’s return, leading the brothers to reopen the eatery in a new and improved two-room space. The new location has been well-received by old regulars who are rediscovering their favorite dishes and enjoying the cozy and inviting atmosphere.

The reopening of MangoSeed has been met with excitement and gratitude from the local community, with new and returning customers expressing their delight at the restaurant’s return. The revamped space offers an elevated dining experience compared to the original location, with a redesigned interior featuring plush booths and a granite bar. The brothers are grateful for the warm reception and are pleased to see customers enjoying drinks and wings while waiting for bike repairs at the adjacent shop.

MangoSeed’s new operating hours are from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesdays-Thursdays, 4-10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays, with the restaurant closed on Mondays. The Burrowes brothers’ dedication to their businesses, both the bike shop and the restaurant, reflects their commitment to serving the local community and providing a welcoming space for customers to enjoy delicious food and drinks. The revived MangoSeed continues to be a hub for neighbors to gather, dine, and experience the unique flavors of Caribbean cuisine prepared by talented chef Paul Burrowes.
