Nadler Booed at Rally for Hostages After Calling for Gaza Aid

Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York was met with boos at a demonstration in Manhattan calling for the release of hostages held by Hamas, after he suggested attendees also push for humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. Despite some applause, heckling grew as he continued to emphasize the need for aid for those suffering in Gaza, with some chanting “bring them home” in response. The demonstration, attended by thousands, was organized by over 150 organizations to mark six months since Hamas attacks on Israel. Some hostages are still being held in Gaza, according to Israeli authorities, and family members of hostages spoke at the event along with Mr. Nadler and others.

The response to Mr. Nadler at the event highlighted a divide among Jewish New Yorkers regarding Israel’s conflict with Hamas. While some reject any criticism of Israel, others, including groups like Jewish Voice for Peace, have called for a cease-fire and criticized Israeli and U.S. governments over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. An organizer from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum New York clarified that the minority who heckled Mr. Nadler did not represent the forum, which prioritizes bringing hostages back home and appreciates Mr. Nadler’s support for the cause. Mr. Nadler’s chief of staff also noted that humanitarian aid for Palestinians is crucial and not an extraordinary statement.

Despite the interruption during his speech, Mr. Nadler continued and concluded with a reference to the Passover story, emphasizing the main goal of bringing the hostages back. The event included an installation symbolizing the suffering of those still in captivity, with people in chains sitting inside dog cages and others chained together nearby. The organizer expressed gratitude for Mr. Nadler’s presence and support, emphasizing the unity among attendees despite differing opinions. The congressman’s speech at the demonstration reflects the ongoing debate within the Jewish community in New York regarding Israel’s actions and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The demonstration at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza near the United Nations headquarters brought together a diverse group of participants, including synagogues, pro-Israel groups, and activist organizations. The event aimed to raise awareness about the hostages still held in Gaza and to urge their release, as well as to advocate for humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in Gaza. Mr. Nadler’s remarks, while met with some disapproval, underscored the complexities and differing perspectives within the Jewish community on how to address the ongoing conflict and crisis in the region. The event, attended by a large crowd, demonstrated the passionate engagement of New Yorkers in advocating for peace and justice in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
