Could Your Love for Seltzer Be Harming Your Gut?

Many people consume sparkling water every day, but there is concern that the carbonation may not be good for digestion and could cause issues such as bloating, reflux, and irritating IBS symptoms. According to experts, the impact of drinking sparkling water on gut health varies depending on individual sensitivity and the type of sparkling water consumed. While most people should not experience any problems with drinking sparkling water, those with gastrointestinal conditions like IBS or GERD may be more sensitive to the carbonation and additives in some sparkling water products.

The carbonation in sparkling water can potentially trigger reflux symptoms, gas, bloating, and diarrhea in individuals with certain gastrointestinal conditions. Additives in flavored sparkling water, such as artificial sweeteners and sugars, may also worsen symptoms for those with sensitive digestive systems or conditions like colitis and Crohn’s disease. Choosing sparkling water with minimal ingredients and avoiding artificial sweeteners and added sugars can help minimize digestive issues for sensitive individuals.

Despite the potential for digestive problems, drinking sparkling water can have benefits for those who do not experience negative side effects. Carbonated water may help relieve symptoms like gas and bloating by encouraging burping and can contribute to hydration, especially for those who struggle to drink enough plain water. While there is no specific amount of sparkling water considered unsafe, individuals experiencing bloating and gas after consuming sparkling water should consider reducing their intake to avoid exacerbating digestive symptoms.

For most people, drinking plain sparkling water can be a suitable way to stay hydrated and enjoy a refreshing beverage. In comparison to other sugary or carbonated beverages like soda or juice, sparkling water can be a healthier alternative. It is essential to pay attention to your body’s reactions to sparkling water and adjust your consumption if it causes discomfort. Ultimately, it is important to listen to your body and avoid consuming things that do not agree with you to maintain good gut health and overall well-being.
