In the world of cinema, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” has continued its reign at the box office for the second consecutive week, despite facing stiff competition from new releases. The MonsterVerse film, directed by Adam Wingard and produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, brought in $31.7 million in its second weekend, demonstrating a 60% drop from its impressive $80 million opening. With a global total of $361.1 million in just two weeks, the film is on track to surpass the $529 million earned by 2014’s “Godzilla.” The latest installment in the series, which sees Godzilla and Kong teaming up, had a production cost of around $135 million. Meanwhile, another primate-themed movie, Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man,” made a strong debut in North American theaters, earning an estimated $10.1 million.

Despite its strong debut, “Monkey Man” faced competition from another new release, “The First Omen,” from Disney’s 20th Century Studios, which struggled to make an impact with audiences. The film, a prequel to the 1976 horror classic “The Omen,” directed by Arkasha Stevenson and starring Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, and Bill Nighy, earned $8.4 million domestically and an additional $9.1 million internationally. In contrast, Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” claimed the third spot at the box office with $9 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $88.8 million and worldwide earnings to $138 million. Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Two” also continued to perform well, adding $7.2 million in its sixth week to reach a domestic total of $264 million. In China, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” made waves, setting records for a non-Chinese animated film with a five-day total exceeding $70 million.
