Mount Etna in Italy dazzles spectators by emitting rare ‘smoke rings’ into the sky

Tourists in Italy were treated to a spectacular show as Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, blew out rare “smoke rings” into the sky. The phenomenon, known as “volcanic vortex rings,” was caused by rapid gas release and the shape of a new crater that opened on Etna’s summit. Pictures and videos showed the volcano resembling a chimney emitting a stream of rings. Boris Behncke, a volcanologist at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Catania, mentioned that Etna was breaking records with this activity, emitting hundreds if not thousands of steam rings.

Behncke also noted that no other volcano on Earth produces as many vapor rings as Etna does. While some other volcanoes have the capability to create smoke rings, strong winds typically prevent them from forming. In November 2023, Etna had a recent eruption where a lava fountain was sent into the air, causing loud booms and explosions. Located in the coastal city of Catania, Etna is the largest of Italy’s three active volcanoes and the largest active volcano in Europe, according to the European Space Agency.

Despite the impressive display of “smoke rings,” there were no reports of any disruptions in the surrounding villages or at Catania airport. The airport typically closes in the case of major eruptions, but this time, there were no significant impacts from the volcanic activity. The phenomenon of the smoke rings was captured in various pictures and videos, attracting attention from both locals and tourists. The eruption happened due to a small mouth opening on the north-eastern rim of the South-East Crater, producing puffs of glowing gas that turned into an impressive amount of steam rings.

Overall, the sight of Mount Etna blowing out “smoke rings” into the sky captivated onlookers with its rare and unique display of volcanic activity. Etna’s ability to produce such a large number of vapor rings set it apart from other volcanoes on Earth. The event, which began with a new crater opening on Etna’s summit, drew attention to the power and beauty of nature’s forces. Despite the show put on by the volcano, there were no significant disruptions reported in the surrounding areas, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacle safely. Ultimately, the “volcanic vortex rings” generated by Etna’s eruption showcased the marvels and unpredictability of the natural world.
