RFK Jr expresses concern over government being used as a weapon against Trump, promises to appoint special counsel for Jan 6 incident

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. expressed concerns over what he sees as the weaponization of the government against former President Donald Trump. Kennedy stated that if elected president, he would appoint a special counsel to investigate whether prosecutorial discretion was abused for political ends in cases related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Kennedy clarified that he is listening to diverse viewpoints on the event and believes that the protesters who broke the law on January 6 started as a protest but it turned into a riot. He acknowledges that the protesters did not carry weapons and had no plans or ability to seize the reins of government, arguing that there is little evidence of a true insurrection.

Kennedy is troubled by what he perceives as the weaponization of government agencies against political opponents, emphasizing the importance of the impartial rule of law in a democracy. He aims to appoint a special counsel, respected by all sides, to investigate possible abuse of prosecutorial discretion in the January 6 cases. Kennedy believes that both parties are using the events of January 6 to further divide the nation, with both Republicans and Democrats portraying their opponents as threats to democracy. He calls for focusing on issues and priorities rather than demonizing opponents.

Kennedy criticized both Trump and Biden for presiding over issues such as the national debt, chronic disease epidemic, government corruption, erosion of civil liberties, and foreign military entanglements without significant improvement. He speculated that the establishment parties campaign on demonizing their opponents because they have little difference on key issues. Special Counsel Jack Smith has charged Trump with conspiracy and obstruction related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, with the Supreme Court set to hear arguments on presidential immunity in the case.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges related to the January 6 events, and over 1,350 people have been charged in connection to the breach of the U.S. Capitol. Kennedy emphasized the need for an impartial investigation into the prosecutorial discretion used in these cases, arguing that political motives may have influenced the severity of the charges. He highlighted the need for democracy and moral governance to prevail through the rule of law, rather than through legal maneuvers and dirty tricks.

Kennedy’s stance on the January 6 events and the subsequent legal actions taken against individuals involved reflects his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served impartially. By acknowledging both Trump’s role in the events and the concerns about political motivations behind the prosecutions, Kennedy presents a nuanced approach to a highly polarizing issue in American politics. His call for a special counsel to investigate possible abuses of prosecutorial discretion is aimed at restoring faith in the justice system and preserving the integrity of democracy.
