In commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the earthquake that devastated L’Aquila on April 6, 2009, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni released an official statement paying tribute to the 309 victims and expressing solidarity with the Aquilan and Abruzzo communities. She praised the resilience and determination of those who lost their loved ones that night, as well as those who have contributed to the city’s rebirth. Meloni highlighted L’Aquila as a model for the state’s response to the emergency, reconstruction efforts, and recent revitalization, which is beginning to show positive results.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the various individuals who have played a role in the city’s recovery, including the solidarity and support shown by Italians, the volunteers who mobilized in the aftermath of the earthquake, and the dedicated efforts of both government and non-government actors in the reconstruction process. Meloni emphasized the government’s commitment to providing certainty to L’Aquila and the municipalities impacted by the 2009 earthquake. She mentioned the allocation of resources in the first budget law with a multi-year vision, simplification of regulations for public reconstruction, unblocking of funds for school reconstruction, and securing funding for the completion of the Teatro Comunale dell’Aquila.

Meloni reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting L’Aquila and the surrounding areas, emphasizing their resilience and pride in overcoming the challenges they faced. She highlighted the importance of continuing to provide careful attention to the city and internal areas, ensuring their continued development and growth. The Prime Minister expressed solidarity with the communities that came together in a collective mourning during the candlelight vigil, renewing the ritual of remembrance. She concluded by emphasizing that the rebirth of L’Aquila represents a part of the Italian people’s own rebirth, noting that despite being wounded 15 years ago, they have shown resilience and have come back stronger.

Overall, Prime Minister Meloni’s statement on the 15th anniversary of the L’Aquila earthquake reflects on the tragedy that struck the city in 2009 and the progress that has been made in the years since. She praises the resilience and determination of the Aquilan and Abruzzo communities, as well as the contributions of individuals from various sectors in the reconstruction efforts. Meloni’s message also emphasizes the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting L’Aquila and the surrounding municipalities, providing resources and simplifying regulations to facilitate the city’s recovery and development. The Prime Minister’s words convey a message of solidarity, remembrance, and hope for the future, recognizing the strength and dignity shown by the people of L’Aquila in the face of adversity.
