Amazon Web Services recently announced hundreds of job cuts in areas such as training, sales, and physical stores technology, while still actively hiring in core areas of its business, with thousands of job posts currently available. The largest number of job posts for AWS is in operations, IT, and support engineering, followed by software development, solutions architect, sales, advertising, and technical project/program/product management. A significant number of job posts are in the U.S., particularly in Washington state, Virginia, California, Texas, New York, Ohio, and Oregon, but there are also job opportunities internationally in countries such as Ireland, India, Germany, Japan, the UK, Australia, Canada, Israel, and China.

Many of the current job posts for AWS make reference to AI, highlighting the company’s focus on this area. The recent job cuts at AWS were unexpected for many employees, but Amazon has been working to find internal opportunities for those impacted by the cuts and has been offering severance packages and other benefits. The company is committed to supporting employees throughout their transition to new roles, both within and outside of Amazon. In the Sales, Marketing, and Global Services organization, the majority of cuts are in training and certification, and sales operations, as the company shifts its focus to self-serve digital training and programs run by external partners.

The job cuts in the AWS team that develops technology for Amazon’s physical retail stores followed reports that Amazon is moving away from its “Just Walk Out” technology in larger Amazon Fresh grocery stores. Despite these cuts, AWS continues to lead its rivals Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in market share, reporting profits of $7.2 billion on revenue of $24.2 billion in the fourth quarter, which significantly contributed to Amazon’s overall business growth. The decisions to make these cuts were described as difficult but necessary as AWS continues to invest, hire, and optimize resources to deliver innovation for its customers. The company is dedicated to helping employees in their transition to new roles and ensuring they are supported through the process.

Overall, while Amazon Web Services experienced job cuts in certain areas this week, the company remains focused on hiring in core areas of its business and continuing to innovate for its customers. With job posts available globally, including in countries like the U.S., Ireland, India, Germany, Japan, the UK, Australia, Canada, Israel, and China, AWS is working towards prioritizing certain functional areas while providing opportunities for employees impacted by the recent cuts. The company’s commitment to supporting employees through their transition, along with its strong financial performance, highlights its dedication to growth and adaptation within the tech industry.
