Last week, a collection of senior players – those that were not away on international duty – were beaten 3-0 in a training exercise by the club’s U21 side at Cobham. Furious Maresca was so incensed he ordered them back in for training when initially, they were due to spend precious time with their families. Right-back Gusto insists the brutal call paid dividends and helped inspire Thursday’s win over Spurs, stating ahead of today’s trip to Brentford: “I don’t know what you’ve seen, it was just normal, we have to fight in training and that’s what he said.READ MORE: Enzo Maresca singles out the player who makes Chelsea a “different team”READ MORE: Chelsea stance on sending Jadon Sancho back to Man Utd after £17m Sir Jim Ratcliffe admission”Nothing crazy happened but we just have to continue in this way. That’s how we won against Spurs because we trained well this week and we have to maintain that. That’s why we work every day, we’re trying to create something as a team to win games because every team that’s behind us is pushing. “Our target is to finish in the top four, we don’t have to hide, we just have to show our best and keep fighting and that’s how we will achieve it. Now we have an important game against Brentford and need to continue showing our togetherness.” While Chelsea have gunned out five successive home victories in the Premier League, they are winless in their past seven top-flight away matches and have not achieved three points on the road since edging Spurs 4-3 in seven-goal thriller on December 8. Gusto is confident the timely returns of Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, who both impressed in midweek, can help Maresca’s Blues finish the campaign strongly.Chelsea ran out 1-0 winners over Tottenham on Thursday night(Image: Crystal Pix/MB Media/Getty Images)The Frenchman added when asked about the value of having both attackers back fit: “It’s very important for us. Not just them, we are just happy to try and create something between us, as a team. We really need everyone for the rest of the season to try and achieve our target.” Chelsea’s fighting spirit was typified by Moises Caicedo against Tottenham after he shook off an early injury scare to battle on through the pain barrier. Not only did he have a thunderous strike chalked off following a lengthy VAR check but he also won the most duels (eight), most tackles (four), won the most fouls (three) and made more last-man tackles (one) than any other player on the pitch. Gusto believes standard-setter Caicedo’s commitment serves as a source of inspiration at Chelsea. He said of the club’s £115million British-record signing: “Moises always shows it and he pushes everyone. That’s the type of spirit we need to finish in the top four.”Ex-Lyon defender Gusto is also adamant the competition between him and Reece James at right-back is healthy for the club, concluding: “I just try to give my best and help the team as much as I can, the coach picked me to start and I have to show him that I can play there.”Join our new WhatsApp community!
