An airport worker who was brutally assaulted by a man banned from boarding his flight to Bali will receive thousands of dollars in compensation from her attacker.
The woman was working at Perth Airport when a traveler became aggressive waiting to check in for a flight on Feb. 25.
The Indian man, 43, was told he would not be permitted to board his flight because of his behavior.
An Australian Federal Police spokesman said the man left but returned, jumped over the counter and slapped the female worker to the face.
“He then grabbed her by the throat, pulled her to the ground and kicked her,” a spokesman said.
“Two members of the public intervened to subdue the man until AFP officers placed him in custody.
“The female worker needed medical attention for minor injuries received during the incident.”
The man pleaded guilty to common assault and was ordered to pay the victim $7,500 [$4,712 USD] in compensation by a Perth Magistrate on March 6.
AFP Acting Superintendent Aviation Shona Davis said they had a zero-tolerance policy to violent or abusive behavior towards workers or any travelers inside airport precincts.
“No one should go to work and be subjected to violence or aggression,” Acting Superintendent Davis said.
“The AFP is committed to working closely with all our partners in the airline industry to intervene if anyone’s behaviour interferes with the safety of staff, visitors and passengers in or around the airport.
“The AFP will not hesitate to prosecute those who break the law and poor behavior will not be tolerated at airports.”
