Wisconsin Supreme Court Declines to Clarify District Boundaries for Possible Recall Election

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has refused to offer clarification on which legislative district boundary lines should be used for a potential recall election targeting Republican Assembly speaker Robin Vos, initiated by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The effort to recall Vos seems to have fallen short of gathering enough valid signatures to trigger an election, but the state’s Elections Commission sought guidance from the court on which maps should apply for any recall or special election before new maps take effect in November. The court declined to provide additional guidance, leaving the decision to the Elections Commission to administer the election process.

Despite the court’s ruling, the Wisconsin Elections Commission holds the responsibility to oversee elections, not the Supreme Court. The Commission is now tasked with determining whether the recall petition against Vos had enough valid signatures by an April 11 deadline. A preliminary review by the Commission indicated a lack of sufficient signatures from residents of Vos’s district. Vos, who faces a recall effort for his refusal to impeach the state’s top elections official or pursue attempts to decertify President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in Wisconsin, has criticized those behind the recall as “whack jobs and morons.”

Vos, who challenged the validity of thousands of signatures and dismissed the recall effort regardless of the district boundaries, has been the subject of criticism from former President Trump and his followers. Trump accused Vos of covering up election corruption, leading to his supporters mounting an unsuccessful primary challenge in 2022 and now seeking a recall election. Recognizing the initial recall effort’s potential shortfall in signatures, organizers launched a new recall campaign last week. Vos, the most powerful Republican in the Wisconsin Legislature, has held the position of Assembly speaker since 2013 and is the longest-serving speaker in state history, having first been elected in 2004.

The ongoing political drama surrounding Speaker Robin Vos’s potential recall comes amid a larger debate over the validity and fairness of election processes in Wisconsin. Vos’s refusal to take actions perceived as supportive of Donald Trump’s claims of election fraud has galvanized criticism and opposition against the long-standing Republican leader. The uncertainty surrounding the legislative district boundaries and their impact on the recall process adds complexity to an already contentious situation, with the Wisconsin Supreme Court opting not to intervene further in the matter. As the Wisconsin Elections Commission continues its review and potential decision on the recall petition, the fate of Speaker Vos remains uncertain, with both his supporters and detractors closely watching the developments in the coming weeks.
