Withholding gratuities might seem criminal in our tip-centered economy. However, a diner has been praised after refusing to leave extra on their $200 check because their servers had “forgotten” about them while perusing their phones.
According to a Reddit post blowing up online, the incident occurred while the diner was having a “celebratory dinner” at a “nice place” with only 8-10 other customers at the restaurant.
The meal started normally enough with the server taking the dining party to their table, giving them water, and asking for their drink order.
That’s when their waiters appeared to go AWOL, prompting the Redditor to get up and see what was amiss.
“15 minutes went by, so I went to try to find our server,” they wrote. “I didn’t see her but mentioned to the hostess that we were ready to order if she could find our server.”
Unfortunately, that was just the tip of the iceberg.
When 10 more minutes passed without the servers surfacing, the diner returned to the front desk, where — to their horror — they found the “server and the hostess both scrolling on their phones in silence.”
The diner decided to politely confront the absentee waitstaff, which fortunately did the trick.
“I said ‘Excuse me, we are ready to order when you’re ready,’” recalled the Reddit user. “They both jumped out of their skin and tucked their phones away. The server came and took our order and the night proceeded normally after that.”
However, the Reddit poster refused to leave a gratuity on the $200 bill.
“Given that we waited 25 minutes to order our food (also didn’t get our drinks until after we ordered food), and I know what the server was actually doing in the meantime, I decided not to tip,” declared the Redditor.
Reddit commenters were similarly horrified over the duo’s dereliction of dinner duty.
“I see nothing wrong with not tipping in this situation,” said one commiserator.
“As a former server, if they were slammed and had a legit reason for being so far behind that they couldn’t get to you, that’s one thing,” another wrote. “If they are just scrolling their phones to the point that they forget to do their job, you were completely justified. Tipping should be to show appreciation for service. You did not get good service.”
“This is when you get up and leave, not order food,” said a third.
Others urged the Redditor to inform the brass about their negligence.
“As a former chef, please call and tell the management,” suggested one industry insider. “We hated people like this and want them fired.”
