Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is being praised as an underrated travel destination by National Geographic writer Andrew Nelson in his newly released book “Here Not There.” Nelson compares Pittsburgh to cities like San Francisco, Detroit, and Cleveland, highlighting its mix of technology sectors and historic neighborhoods. He emphasizes the city’s beautiful views, including the Duquesne Incline cable car and the steepest street in the country, Canton Avenue. Cultural institutions like the Carnegie Museums, Phipps Conservatory, and Botanical Gardens, as well as events like Picklesburgh and the Andy Warhol Museum, are also lauded by Nelson as must-see attractions in Pittsburgh.

In addition to its cultural offerings, Pittsburgh has long been a sports destination, attracting fans with its championship-winning teams like the Steelers and the Penguins. The city’s tourism revenue reached $6.4 billion in 2023, thanks in part to the popularity of sports events. Baseball fans flock to PNC Park to watch the Pirates play against the backdrop of the city’s skyline and the Allegheny River. Hockey enthusiasts can catch games with star players like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin at the Penguins’ home arena. Pittsburgh’s recent success in college basketball with Duquesne men’s team winning their first March Madness game in over 50 years has added to the city’s sports excitement.

Beyond sports, Pittsburgh offers a vibrant food scene, with local favorites like sandwiches piled high with french fries and cole slaw, reflecting the city’s unique culinary traditions. VisitPittsburgh’s President and CEO Jerad Bachar describes Pittsburgh as a place where “tech meets rec, Warhol meets whiskey, and unexpected adventures abound,” emphasizing its diverse offerings for visitors. The city’s markets, including the Strip District, offer international flavors alongside popular food festivals like Picklesburgh. The Andy Warhol Museum is a must-visit for art enthusiasts, showcasing the work of the iconic pop artist who hailed from Pittsburgh.

While Pittsburgh may not have the mainstream appeal of cities like San Francisco or New York City, it offers a unique blend of history, culture, and outdoor recreation that sets it apart as a travel destination. From exploring the city’s hilly neighborhoods to experiencing its vibrant arts scene, there is no shortage of things to see and do in Pittsburgh. Whether you’re a sports fan looking to catch a game at one of the city’s iconic venues or a foodie seeking out the latest culinary delights, Pittsburgh has something for everyone. As word continues to spread about this hidden gem in western Pennsylvania, more travelers are discovering the charms of the “Steel City” for themselves.
