rewrite this title Uber driver’s list of passenger rules shocks readers — are they ‘common courtesy’ or ‘honestly insane’?

This list was Uber ridiculous.

A ride-share driver’s long list of rules for passengers has sparked a debate after a customer shared a photo of the shocking list on Reddit.

User @LieutenantChonkster posted a photo of the note that was laminated and hung in the car on the Mildy Infuriating thread.

“Greetings, I welcome you as my passenger. Here are clear etiquette rules I require to ensure a smooth ride for us,” the note started.

Some of the rules, including requiring pets to be held or placed on the floor and prohibiting children from kicking the seats or playing with the doors and windows, are reasonable but others seem a bit more extreme.

For example, the driver has banned phone calls and refuses to lower the volume of the radio.

“I will not turn my radio off or down to inaudibility for your personal or business calls,” the note states.

“I do not want to hear your corporate meetings or personal business dealings. Have them before entering or once exiting my car. No exceptions.”

People online noted that the majority of the rules seemed understandable but were rudely stated and followed by threats.

“Do not eat or drink in my car. Water is fine. If you do and a mess or smell if left it will be reported to Uber/Lyft and they will charge a cleaning fee starting at $50. No matter how small. Same applies to children,” the list says.

Riders are also threatened with being reported for not covering their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze or not wearing a mask when sick.

Yet, wearing a seatbelt is up to the rider although they are warned they could be ticketed.

“If at any point you’re not enjoying your ride, refuse to respect my rules, or feel uncomfortable in any way, I will gladly pull over so that you may request another driver. Ask me to right away,” the note says.

It ends with the driver thanking riders for “respecting these simple car etiquette rules.”

However, many people noted that some of the rules were not so simple and the way they were phrased was not very respectful.

“The only unreasonable thing is the driver’s refusal to turn his music down or off. Everything else is just common courtesy. Keep your pets/kids safe in their seats, don’t have your speakerphone on, don’t make a mess or leave smells in the car by eating/smoking/vaping. Reasonable,” someone commented.

“That said, the all-caps and preachy tone are incredibly off-putting,” they added.

“Having a list of a million things you’re not allowed to do and then ending it with ‘seat belts optional’ is honestly insane,” another person noted.

Someone else said, “I’m OK with all of this except the business calls and turning down the music.”

“You’re providing a service to someone paying you. You need to cater to any reasonable needs. You’re not my friend giving me a ride, you’re the person providing a service I paid for.”
