She told Newsweek that the couple had found the house before her husband was deployed. Her parents bought it, renting it out while her husband was away with the intention to sell it to Rogers and her husband upon his return.Luckily, the renters moved out of the house two months earlier than Rogers had thought, leaving her time to execute the move-in without her husband’s knowledge. But planning the surprise took some extra efforts in logistics.”Preparing the house was all about timing and creativity,” she said. “Since there was an eight-hour time difference, I mostly worked on it while he was sleeping to keep it a surprise.”Alexis leaned on her family—her parents and sister—for help with moving and decorating. “I focused on making the space feel cozy and welcoming by decorating for the holidays, organizing every corner and adding personal touches that I knew would make him smile,” she said. “It was so hard not to tell him—I’m terrible at keeping secrets—but I managed to pull it off.”In the lead up to the surprise, Alexis was already navigating intense emotions—but she was almost there.”When he texted me that he’d made it back to the USA, I was at the house painting,” she said. “I instantly started bawling.” @alexisgrace.rback story: Before he deployed we found a house we loved and so my parents bought the house and had renters in it for a year while he was gone and then we would buy the house from my parents when my husband got back. We gave the renters notice to be moved out by January 7th but instead they moved out NOV.14th. So I decided to not tell him that they moved out early and surprise him with being moved in by the time he got home december 7th and in time for Christmas!! ❤️ I had told him we were going to drive by the house on our way to my parents house (where we had been living) to look at the new roof that was just put on that week. ♬ original sound – Luke Rob
When they were reunited, she drove her husband to the house under the guise of inspecting the roof. He was so focused on looking up, she said, that he didn’t realize anything was different about it.When she stopped the car, her husband started to ask: “Why did you—” before pausing and realizing something was up. “His face was priceless—completely shocked and confused,” she said. “Once it all clicked, he was so surprised and couldn’t stop smiling.”The redecorated home was not just about aesthetics. Rogers was keen to make sure it was ready for the couple to spend the holidays in, as well.”He was relieved that he wouldn’t have to deal with moving in and decorating after only being home for a few weeks,” she said. “We were both thrilled to spend Christmas in our own house instead of at my parents’ place.”Rogers said the past few weeks have been full of joy—partly due to the addition of a new family member.”It was so nice having him with me for family events again,” she said. “We even added a Bernedoodle puppy to our family for Christmas!”
