Blues Dominate Blackhawks in Impressive Winter Classic Win

The Winter Classic returned to Wrigley Field on December 31, 2024, with the Chicago Blackhawks hosting the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis coach Jim Montgomery expressed his excitement at the opportunity to play an NHL hockey game at such a historic venue. The event was a festive affair, with fireworks lighting up the night sky, musical performances by The Smashing Pumpkins and Chance the Rapper, and appearances by actors Bill Murray and Jon Hamm. Despite the Chicago-centric celebrations, it was the Blues who emerged victorious with a 6-2 win.

St. Louis captain Brayden Schenn described the Winter Classic experience as amazing for both the fans and the team, especially with the added bonus of winning at Wrigley Field. Cam Fowler, who had recently been acquired by St. Louis in a trade, celebrated his 1,000th NHL game with two goals, becoming the first player in NHL history to reach this milestone while playing outdoors. Fowler reflected on the surreal nature of the moment, as he adjusted to his new team and shared the experience with his family. The victory was a memorable one for the Blues, but the Blackhawks were left searching for answers after their fifth consecutive loss.

The Blackhawks struggled to find their footing in the game, allowing the Blues to pull ahead with three goals in the second period. Fans in attendance at Wrigley Field were heard chanting “Let’s go Blues!” as Chicago faltered. Forward Connor Bedard expressed disappointment in the team’s performance, acknowledging the high cost of tickets for supporters who came out to the game. The day began with the Blackhawks traveling to Wrigley Field on an elevated train, clad in custom “Team Chicago” gear that paid tribute to first responders and community organizations.

In contrast, the St. Louis Blues honored hockey legend Wayne Gretzky with their pregame attire, showcasing the number 99 and the phrase “GRETZKY’S BASEMENT.” The team wore gray sweatshirts and hats, paying homage to Gretzky’s impact on the game and the St. Louis community. Blues defenseman Justin Faulk highlighted Gretzky’s contributions and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor him. The Blues made their way to the visitor’s clubhouse at Wrigley Field, navigating a long stairway on their journey to the ice, a routine they have embraced during outdoor games to stay focused and prepared.

Overall, the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field was a memorable event for both teams, with the Blues celebrating a decisive victory while the Blackhawks faced disappointment. The festive atmosphere, musical performances, and nods to hockey history added to the excitement of the game. Despite the outcome, both teams and their fans enjoyed the unique experience of playing NHL hockey at such an iconic venue. The Winter Classic served as a reminder of the sport’s rich history and its ability to bring communities together in celebration of the game.
