Aubrey Plaza’s late husband, Jeff Baena, co-wrote a movie called “Horse Girl” five years before his sudden death. The film, co-written with Alison Brie, was inspired by their family members’ struggles with mental illness. Baena discussed on Reddit how both he and Brie had family members with mental health issues that influenced the creation of the movie. He specifically mentioned his first stepmother’s struggles with manic depression and being in and out of mental health facilities due to issues with the Baker Act.

In response to a fan question, Baena explained that while “Horse Girl” is not an activist film, it does tackle themes related to how society treats individuals with mental illness. He mentioned how people who still need treatment are often released from mental health facilities after the mandatory 72-hour hold, only applying to those who are deemed a danger to themselves. Brie also shared her personal connection to the film, citing her grandmother’s paranoid schizophrenia, which added real emotions to her performance in the movie.

Baena, who also directed “Horse Girl,” was found dead at his Los Angeles home at the age of 47. The circumstances of his death were not immediately disclosed. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that they responded to a death investigation, and the case was being handled by the Coroner’s Office. Plaza, who had been married to Baena since 2020, released a statement through her representative requesting privacy during this difficult time. Despite keeping their marriage private until 2021, the couple had been together since 2010 and collaborated on several projects.

Plaza has not publicly addressed her husband’s passing, but she and her family are grieving the loss of Baena. The couple did not have any children together. Plaza and Baena worked together on various projects, including the film “Life After Beth.” The sudden death of Baena has left those who knew him shocked and saddened. If anyone is struggling with mental health issues or thoughts of suicide, they are encouraged to reach out to support services like the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Overall, Jeff Baena’s legacy includes co-writing and directing “Horse Girl,” a film that delves into the complexities of mental illness and its impact on individuals and society. His personal experiences with family members’ struggles with mental health informed the project’s themes and brought authenticity to the story. His sudden death has left friends, family, and fans mourning the loss of a talented filmmaker. Plaza, while grieving in private, has asked for privacy during this difficult time. The couple’s collaborative work in the film industry has left a lasting impact, showcasing their creative partnership and dedication to their craft.
