The recent mass shooting in Cetinje, Montenegro, which resulted in the deaths of 12 people, has shocked and dismayed the nation. A memorial service was held for the victims, attended by family members, political leaders, and church officials. Mayor Nikola Đurašković expressed condolences to the families and stated that the tragedy was senseless and difficult to comprehend. The gunman, identified as Aco Martinović, also died by suicide, and several others were injured in the attack. This incident marked the second mass shooting in Cetinje in less than three years, prompting calls for stricter measures to curb illegal weapons in the country.

Following the tragedy, a top-level meeting was held in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, where discussions on implementing a new, tougher gun law took place. Prime Minister Milojko Spajić announced that individuals with registered firearms would undergo additional security and psychological checks, while severe punishments were planned for those holding illegal weapons. The government also pledged immediate action to seize the illegal firearms believed to be in possession of the country’s 620,000 citizens. Spajić emphasized that there would be a two-month grace period for individuals to surrender illegal weapons without facing consequences, after which strict enforcement measures would be implemented.

The government’s response to the mass shooting in Cetinje includes a focus on stemming the flow of illegal weapons in Montenegro, as the country ranks sixth globally in terms of illegal weapons per capita. Prime Minister Spajić’s proposed measures aim to tackle this issue head-on, with stricter penalties for illegal firearm possession. The National Security Council also emphasized the urgency of addressing the proliferation of illicit weapons to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The new gun law is expected to enhance security checks for gun owners and improve monitoring of firearm distribution to prevent weapons from falling into the wrong hands.

The commemoration of the victims of the Cetinje mass shooting highlighted the profound impact of such senseless violence on families and communities in Montenegro. The presence of political and church leaders at the memorial service demonstrated solidarity and support for those affected by the tragedy. Mayor Đurašković’s words of condolence reflected the nation’s grief and the shared sense of loss experienced by all Montenegrins. The tragic event underscored the need for stronger gun control measures to prevent further violence and protect citizens from harm, prompting swift action from the government to address the issue of illegal weapons.

The recent spate of mass shootings in Montenegro, including the tragic events in Cetinje, has prompted calls for swift and decisive action to prevent further violence. The government’s commitment to implementing a new gun law and cracking down on illegal firearms highlights the seriousness with which authorities are addressing the issue. By imposing stricter security checks on gun owners and enforcing harsh penalties for illegal possession, Montenegro aims to enhance public safety and prevent future tragedies. The country’s response to the mass shooting reflects a determination to prioritize the well-being of its citizens and strengthen measures to ensure a more secure and peaceful society for all.
