The College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame was marred by tragedy when an unidentified driver intentionally plowed a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 and injuring more than two dozen. The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terror, and concerns about security ahead of the game have been raised. Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley shared his condolences for the victims and stated that organizers are working with authorities to ensure the safety of attendees.

Despite the tragic events, the Sugar Bowl Committee is working with law enforcement to ensure the safety of attendees at the Caesars Superdome for the matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame. The New Orleans Police Department reported that the driver killed at least 10 people and injured 35 others before being fatally struck by law enforcement. The suspect also exchanged gunfire with officers, striking two before being killed. The FBI confirmed that improvised explosive devices were found at the scene and are working to determine their viability.

Despite the tragic events on Bourbon Street, officials have stated that the game between Georgia and Notre Dame will proceed as scheduled. During a press conference, Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick assured the public that measures were being taken to ensure the safety of those attending the game at the Superdome. The capacity of the stadium is over 80,000, and authorities are working to make sure that the routes to and from the venue are secure.
