At least 10 people were killed and dozens more were injured when a driver plowed a car into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, according to authorities. The driver, a male, reportedly exited the vehicle and fired a weapon after hitting the crowd. A large police presence and EMS were reported at the scene, with roughly 30 people transported to five hospitals across the city for injuries sustained in the attack. Two officers were also injured in the incident but are in stable condition, while the suspect is confirmed dead at the scene.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell initially declared the incident a “terrorist attack,” but FBI agents later contradicted her, stating that this has not been confirmed. The White House confirmed that President Biden has been briefed on the attack and offered support to New Orleans Mayor Cantrell. The FBI is on the ground, assisting local law enforcement in the investigation, and the President will continue to be updated throughout the day. The incident occurred at around 3:15 a.m. at the intersection of Bourbon Street and Iberville.

Prior to the attack, the New Orleans Police Department had announced heightened security measures for New Year’s Eve, with an additional 300 officers brought in from other parts of the state. Security was also increased for the Sugar Bowl slated to take place later that day. The NOPD noted that residents and visitors could expect an increased law enforcement presence, including marked and unmarked vehicles, officers on foot, bike, and horseback, and the Mounted Patrol. The total number of victims involved in the incident has not yet been confirmed by police.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry described the incident as a “horrific act of violence” on Bourbon Street and requested prayers for the victims and first responders at the scene. He urged those in the vicinity to avoid the area. The NOLA City website reported that 30 injured patients had been taken to local hospitals, with at least 10 confirmed fatalities. Police have not confirmed whether the suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement or if he took his own life.

The White House stated that President Biden had been fully briefed on the tragic incident in New Orleans and has been in contact with local authorities to provide support. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, and the President will remain updated on the situation throughout the day. The NOPD had reassured residents and visitors of enhanced security measures for New Year’s Eve, with a significant police presence across the city. The incident is still under investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
