New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Weather: a new dana in the Mediterranean area and frost and fog in the interior.

In the final days of 2024 and the beginning of 2025 in Spain, the weather will be marked by persistent fog and frost in many inland areas, as well as the presence of a new dana, harmless and of low intensity, between the southern peninsula and northern Africa. This weather pattern will bring increased instability to the Mediterranean region, with potentially strong and persistent showers in some areas. Towards the end of the week, a change in the weather pattern is expected as fronts associated with Atlantic storms bring rain, especially in the northwest like Galicia, with temperatures rising and frost decreasing. Despite rumors of a “Filomena 2,” there is no such event on the horizon.

Over the past weekend, temperatures dropped significantly in the interior of the peninsula, reaching as low as -8° in Molina de Aragon and -5° in Teruel. Persistent fog kept the atmosphere very cold in areas near major rivers. On Monday, the cold weather will continue in the central and northern regions of the peninsula, with persistent fog in some areas. In addition, a new area of instability is predicted in the southeast and Balearic Islands due to the presence of a dana. While there may be showers, they are expected to be weak and no weather alerts are in effect.

On New Year’s Eve, the cold weather will persist in the interior, with frost expected in northern areas where temperatures could drop below -4°. Fog will continue in areas near major rivers and there will be instability in the Mediterranean region, with potentially strong showers, especially near the coasts of Valencia, Murcia, and the Balearic Islands. Weather alerts are in effect for rain in some regions with possible accumulations of 20 liters per square meter in an hour or 60 liters in 12 hours.

As the new year begins, the weather conditions will remain similar, with continued strong showers in the Mediterranean region and persistent fog in inland areas. Temperatures are expected to be very cold where fog persists. The following day, the showers are expected to diminish in the Mediterranean while frost and fog continue in the interior. By the end of the day, a front approaching Galicia may bring rain. Temperatures will start to rise, with frost and fog decreasing.

On the third day of the new year, the front may bring more precipitation to Galicia and the Cantabrian region. Temperatures will continue to rise, with frost and fog diminishing. The weekend may see abundant rain in Galicia and other western areas of the peninsula, while the rest of the country remains dry. In the Canary Islands, the weather will be calm, with possible light rain, and temperatures ranging from 16° to 18° during the New Year’s celebration.
