Founder of Georgia’s ruling political party sanctioned by the US

The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling political party, Georgian Dream. The sanctions were imposed for undermining the democratic and Euro-Atlantic future of Georgia in favor of Russia. This is part of a series of sanctions the U.S. has placed on Georgian politicians and lawmakers this year. The sanctions include freezes on assets, travel bans, and other restrictions on those targeted and their families.

Georgian Dream, under Ivanishvili’s leadership, has been criticized for its violent repression of Georgian citizens, protesters, media members, human rights activists, and opposition figures. The U.S. strongly condemns these actions and is committed to promoting accountability for those undermining democracy and human rights in Georgia. Ivanishvili, a shadowy billionaire with ties to Russia, founded Georgian Dream in 2012 after briefly serving as Georgia’s prime minister.

Critics have accused Georgian Dream of becoming increasingly authoritarian and aligning itself with Moscow. The party has implemented laws that crack down on freedom of speech and LGBTQ+ rights, similar to those used by the Kremlin. This has led the European Union to indefinitely suspend Georgia’s membership application process. In a divisive parliamentary election in October, Georgian Dream won another term, sparking more mass protests. The announcement by the country’s prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, of a four-year suspension of talks on Georgia’s EU membership bid has further fueled public outrage.

The sanctions on Ivanishvili and other Georgian politicians highlight the growing tensions between the pro-Western and pro-Russian factions in Georgia. The U.S. is taking a strong stance against those seen as undermining democratic values and human rights in the country. Georgian Dream’s actions have raised concerns about the country’s tilt towards authoritarianism and away from its aspirations of joining the European Union. The suspension of talks on EU membership has further strained relations between Georgia and Western allies, leading to more protests and calls for accountability.

The ongoing political turmoil in Georgia has implications for the country’s future direction and its relationship with the West and Russia. The imposition of sanctions by the Biden administration signals a shift in U.S. policy towards Georgia and a willingness to take action against those who threaten democracy and human rights. The sanctions on Ivanishvili and Georgian Dream are part of a broader effort to support democratic values and hold accountable those who seek to undermine them. The situation in Georgia remains fluid, with tensions likely to continue between the government and opposition forces, as well as between pro-Western and pro-Russian factions within the country.
