St. Petersburg is set to open a new metro station this week, marking the city’s first new station in five years. The Gorny Institute station, located on Vasilievsky Island, will extend the fourth line westward and will open at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Governor Alexander Beglov announced the station’s opening, calling it a milestone for the city and thanking various groups for their support during the construction process.

Beglov expressed gratitude towards President Vladimir Putin, metro builders, engineers, and residents of St. Petersburg for their patience and assistance in overcoming the challenges faced during the station’s construction. The completion of the Gorny Institute station is seen as the first step in advancing the city’s metro system and bringing forth positive results. The opening of the station comes after years of delays, with originally scheduled completion dates of 2015, 2018, and ultimately 2022.

Construction efforts for the Gorny Institute station were marred by a fatal scaffolding collapse in June 2020, resulting in the death of one worker and injury to another. Despite this setback, the station’s completion is seen as a significant achievement for the city’s metro system. The Gorny Institute station is the first to open since 2019 when three other stations were inaugurated, showcasing the slow expansion of St. Petersburg’s metro system in comparison to Moscow’s robust network.

St. Petersburg’s metro currently consists of five lines and 72 stations, with the addition of Gorny Institute marking a welcomed expansion for commuters in the city. The opening of the new station signifies progress in the development of the metro system, with hopes for continued growth and improvement in the future. The completion of the Gorny Institute station is a positive step towards enhancing transportation options for residents and visitors alike.

The delayed opening of the Gorny Institute station underscores the challenges faced in completing infrastructure projects in a timely manner. Despite setbacks and delays, the perseverance and dedication of all those involved have led to the successful completion of the station, providing a new transportation hub for commuters in St. Petersburg. The station’s opening highlights the importance of investing in and expanding public transportation networks to meet the needs of the growing population.

Overall, the opening of the Gorny Institute metro station in St. Petersburg is a significant achievement for the city, marking the first new station in five years and expanding the fourth line westward. The completion of the station showcases the city’s commitment to improving its metro system and providing enhanced transportation options for residents. Despite delays and challenges faced during construction, the Gorny Institute station represents an important milestone in the ongoing development of St. Petersburg’s metro network.
