The Marie Davidson BMX Track in Nanaimo, B.C. has recently undergone a $1.9-million upgrade, reopening for casual day use. The track, designed by Olympic BMX track builder Tom Ritz Design, now features a recycled concrete and asphalt foundation that has been sealed to allow for year-round use. This makes it Vancouver Island’s only year-round track, providing a much-needed facility for BMX riders in the area. The track has seen significant improvements, including a five-metre start hill and an increased track surface to 4,000 square meters. Nanaimo BMX Association president Craig Hashimoto expressed his excitement at having a facility that can be used throughout the year, benefiting riders locally and from across the island.

The new track has received positive feedback from riders such as nine-year-old Maple Nychyporuk, who appreciates its larger size and increased rhythm compared to the old track. Riders like Ryley Cofield, who has been riding since he was five years old, believe that the new track is a significant improvement that will help them prepare for competitions. With a facility of this standard, riders can now train and improve their skills with the goal of staying competitive on an international level. The track has been made possible through funding provided by various sources, including the Canada Community-Building Fund, the Union of BC Municipalities, and B.C.’s Growing Communities Fund. The Nanaimo BMX Association also contributed $50,000 towards the project.

The investment in the BMX track has rejuvenated one of the oldest tracks in the province, providing a new lease of life to the facility. The previous track, while fantastic, was showing its age, making the upgrade a much-needed improvement. The City of Nanaimo played a crucial role in supporting the redevelopment of the track, showcasing their commitment to providing top-notch facilities for BMX riders in the community. The track is currently open for casual and club use during the day, with competitions expected to resume once the hydraulic start gate and compressor are installed in the spring. An official opening for the track is set to take place in 2025, and it will also host the Harbour City Nationals in July.

The impact of the upgraded BMX track extends beyond just the local community, with riders from across Vancouver Island benefiting from the new facility. The track’s enhanced features, including a larger size and more challenging layout, provide riders with the opportunity to improve their skills and prepare for competitions on a higher level. The new track is a testament to the partnership between government funding sources, community organizations like the Nanaimo BMX Association, and the City of Nanaimo, all working together to support the BMX community. With the track now open for year-round use, riders can look forward to honing their skills in a state-of-the-art facility, contributing to the growth and development of the sport in the region.
