Upcoming Governor Races Could Result in Major Shifts in State Power

The upcoming gubernatorial races in the United States over the next two years will have significant implications for a wide range of policy issues and the future directions of both political parties following the 2024 presidential election. A total of 38 races will be on the ballot, with 16 open races due to term limits. The intense jockeying for these positions has already begun among potential candidates.

In 2025, two key gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia will provide early indicators of voter sentiment in response to the first year of President Trump’s second term. In Virginia, the Republican front-runner is Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, while the Democratic candidate is Rep. Abigail Spanberger. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, a crowded field of high-profile Democrats, including U.S. Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Mikie Sherrill, are vying for the nomination, along with several Republican candidates.

Despite losses in both states in the 2024 election, Democrats are gearing up to focus on core issues such as affordability, education, and safety in their campaigns for the upcoming races. Republicans, on the other hand, are optimistic about their chances by highlighting cost of living and education in their messaging. The results of these races could serve as a barometer of voter sentiment towards Trump’s presidency and the Republican leadership in Washington, D.C.

Looking ahead to 2026, there will be gubernatorial races in 36 states, including several battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Democratic governors in key swing states will be up for re-election in a challenging political landscape. There are also several open races due to term limits, providing opportunities for new candidates to enter the fray.

In states like California and Florida, where gubernatorial races will be open, the primaries will offer insight into the future of both parties. In California, potential candidates include Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, while in Florida, former Rep. Matt Gaetz and current Rep. Byron Donalds are among those being considered. These races will be closely watched as they unfold in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.

Overall, the upcoming gubernatorial races in the United States will play a critical role in shaping the political landscape and determining the future directions of both major political parties. With a large number of races on the horizon and significant challenges facing the country, the outcomes of these elections will have far-reaching implications for the nation’s governance and policy priorities in the years to come.
