Jeremiah Armstead has overcome significant adversity to become the first player from a historically Black college or university or NAIA school to receive the Perry Wallace Most Courageous Award from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Armstead’s journey has been marked by struggles, including homelessness and instability, as his family moved around frequently during his childhood. Despite facing many challenges, Armstead never lost faith and is now thriving as a basketball player at Fisk University.

Armstead’s coach, Kenny Anderson, who also faced adversity growing up, is impressed by Armstead’s resilience and determination. Anderson, a former NBA player, sees similarities between his own experiences and those of Armstead, and is proud to support and mentor him. Armstead’s perseverance and positive attitude have made a lasting impression on those around him, including his coach, who recognizes the young player’s talent and character.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Philadelphia, Armstead’s family faced numerous challenges, including homelessness and financial instability. After moving to California to live with family, they were left stranded when their relative unexpectedly moved away. Armstead and his family spent time living in shelters and hotels before finally finding some stability during his senior year of high school. Despite the many obstacles he faced, Armstead remained focused on improving his basketball skills.

With the help of Stephen Bernstein’s foundation, Armstead was able to connect with Fisk University in Nashville, where he has continued to excel both on and off the court. Armstead made significant physical and academic progress during his time at Fisk, losing weight and pursuing a degree in kinesiology. While his family has recently moved into their own apartment, Armstead continues to face challenges as he supports his mother, sister, and brother, all of whom have their own struggles.

Basketball has been a source of comfort and stability for Armstead throughout his life, and he credits the sport with helping him navigate the difficulties he has faced. Now a college student with a promising future ahead of him, Armstead is grateful for the opportunities he has been given and remains focused on his academic and athletic goals. Despite the challenges he has overcome, Armstead remains humble and grateful for the support he has received along the way.

As Armstead prepares to receive the Perry Wallace Most Courageous Award, he reflects on the journey that has brought him to this point. From sleeping in cars to receiving recognition for his courage and perseverance, Armstead’s story is one of resilience and determination. Through it all, he has remained grateful for the kindness and support of those who have helped him along the way, and he looks forward to continuing to inspire others with his story of triumph over adversity.
