Democrat Rep. Ruben Gallego has emerged victorious in the hotly contested Arizona Senate race, defeating Republican Kari Lake with 49.7% of the vote, compared to Lake’s 48.2%. This race was closely watched, as it represented a shift in power in the now-Republican controlled Senate. Green Party candidate Eduardo Quintana also garnered about 2% of the vote. Gallego, an incumbent congressman, and Lake, a former local news anchor, vied for the seat being vacated by Democrat-turned-independent Kyrsten Sinema.

Both candidates aimed to appeal to moderate and disaffected voters, especially Republicans. Gallego secured endorsement from the Arizona Police Association, which supported President-elect Donald Trump, highlighting his commitment to supporting law enforcement and keeping Arizona families safe. Lake, on the other hand, received endorsements from Arizona Governor Ducey and her former gubernatorial primary rival Karrin Taylor Robson, who were popular among moderate Republicans and independents. These endorsements were key in boosting their campaigns and influencing voters.

Inflation and abortion were key issues in the race, with inflation reaching 13% in 2022 before calming down and a proposition on the constitutional right to abortion also on the ballot, which passed by a wide margin. The border was another crucial issue in the race, with Gallego advocating for a congressional border bill and Lake earning the nickname “Border Kari Lake” from Trump. The candidates clashed on their approaches to border policies and combating migrant crime, with Gallego emphasizing bipartisanship and Lake highlighting concerns about criminals and terrorists entering the country.

The race was marked by combative moments, including a heated debate on Oct. 9 where the candidates discussed their views on border legislation. Gallego emphasized his bipartisan approach to addressing border issues, while Lake raised concerns about criminals and terrorists entering the country unchecked. Gallego and Lake were aligned with their respective presidential nominees, with Lake campaigning alongside Trump and Gallego opening for Vice President Harris at various events. Polling initially favored Gallego throughout the race, although the momentum shifted towards Lake in the final week leading up to the election.

Overall, the Arizona Senate race between Ruben Gallego and Kari Lake was closely watched and highly contested, with Gallego ultimately emerging as the winner. Gallego’s victory represents a significant win for Democrats in a state where the presidential race was projected to be won by Trump. The candidates focused on key issues such as law enforcement, inflation, abortion, and border security, highlighting the divisive political climate in the state. Gallego’s victory signals a shift in power in the Senate, with implications for future policies and legislation in Arizona.
