Enrollment on the rise at Mississippi universities, with decreases reported at three campuses

Overall, enrollment at public universities in Mississippi increased this fall semester compared to last year, with a total of 79,817 students enrolled, a 3.6% increase from the previous year. The University of Mississippi saw the largest increase with an 11% growth in enrollment, reaching 23,981 students. The school reported having the largest freshman class in state history, with 5,973 first-year students coming from various locations within Mississippi, as well as other states and countries. Alcorn State University also saw an increase of 3.5%, reaching a total of 2,995 students, while Mississippi State University had a 2.2% increase, totaling 23,150 students.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center reported a 0.9% increase in enrollment, reaching 3,143 students, and the University of Southern Mississippi saw a 0.5% increase, totaling 13,170 students. Mississippi Valley State University and Jackson State University both experienced slight increases in enrollment, with a 0.4% and 0.5% increase respectively. However, Delta State University, and Mississippi University for Women saw decreases in enrollment, with decreases of 2.3% and 1.5% respectively. Jackson State University had the largest decrease with a 3.6% drop in enrollment, down to 6,326 students.

The increase in enrollment at many Mississippi public universities is a positive sign for higher education in the state, indicating continued interest in pursuing college education despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. The diverse student population at the University of Mississippi, with students from various states and countries, reflects the school’s reputation and appeal as a top educational institution in the region. The growth in enrollment at Alcorn State University and Mississippi State University also highlights the importance of these institutions in providing quality education to a wide range of students.
