Currently, California produces around 11 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel annually. This announcement comes amidst concerns raised by airline workers and advocates about the health impacts of jet fuel emissions. The Air Resources Board had initially included jet fuel in proposed updates to California’s low carbon fuel standard program but later removed it from the proposed changes, a decision that will be subject to a board vote in the near future.
In recent years, California has taken significant steps to phase out the sale of new fossil-fuel powered vehicles, trains, and lawn mowers, demonstrating its commitment to transitioning towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation options. President Joe Biden’s administration has also set targets for reducing aviation emissions, aiming to cut emissions by 20% by 2030 and replace all kerosene-based jet fuel with sustainable alternatives by 2050. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, planes accounted for about 9% of transportation-related emissions in the U.S. in 2022, with cars and trucks being the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
Governor Gavin Newsom, a vocal advocate for climate action, praised the new partnership, highlighting its significance in addressing emissions and protecting communities.
