California family finds solace in shared faith and love through new business venture: ‘Dad and God guiding us’

The Cook family of Sacramento, California, started Something Sweet, a premium frozen cookie dough brand, in 2022 as a way to honor their late patriarch, Dan Cook, who unexpectedly passed away in 2021. The family, consisting of mom Kim Cook and daughters Lindsey, Brittney, and Cailin, decided to turn their grief into purpose by launching the brand, which ships nationwide. They described themselves as a close-knit unit that made decisions and approached life as a team from the beginning, even referring to themselves as “Team Cook.”

The idea for Something Sweet came about when daughter Brittney suggested that they sell the popular brown butter chocolate chip cookies that her mom used to bake. Kim Cook, a self-taught baker and food enthusiast, had always considered turning her passion for baking into a business, but the timing was never right. After losing her job and husband, Kim decided to pursue the family’s dream of starting a business together. The family came together to create Something Sweet, with each member playing a crucial role in its development.

The brand officially launched on the one-year anniversary of Dan Cook’s passing and quickly gained popularity, shipping nationwide within two months and making its way onto retail shelves in California within a year. The Cook family credits their faith and belief in a higher power for guiding them through the process and giving them the strength to overcome their grief. They incorporated symbols of their family and faith into their logo, with four circles representing the women in the family and a center spot for Dan Cook, as well as a cross symbolizing their continued faith in the future.

The Cook sisters, Lindsey and Brittney, emphasized the role their father played in inspiring them to pursue their dreams and to push beyond their comfort zones. They described their business as a calling that they feel was meant for them, even though it can be daunting at times. Despite the pain of their loss, the family believes that there is a reason for everything that has happened and has found solace in being able to reach and connect with others through their business.

As Something Sweet continues to grow, the family remains committed to expanding their reach and sharing their message of turning pain into purpose. The pre-made frozen cookies are currently available for purchase online and in select California retailers, with plans to expand further in the future. The Cook family hopes that their story can serve as inspiration for others facing challenging circumstances and demonstrate the power of resilience and faith in the face of adversity.
