Jakins, participating in his 46th attempt to clinch the title, managed to secure victory in the men’s final against Alastair Johnson-Ferguson, a 23-year-old civil engineer. Jakins impressive win, smashing the conker with a single strike led to speculation that he might have used a steel conker. Such a move would give him an unfair advantage as steel conkers are virtually indestructible compared to natural ones. Contest officials are now conducting an investigation to verify the allegations.
The game of conkers is not immune to underhanded tactics. Cheating techniques include soaking the nut in vinegar or roasting it to increase its durability. According to Rick Murphy, a longtime judge at the competition, through careful preparation and oversight, the probability of any foul play in the tournament is very low. Notably, the randomly selected conkers are carefully prepared by volunteers and delivered to different locations to be used in the competition. The chance of anyone altering the conkers prior to the game is almost nil.
In Jakins’s defense, Murphy noted that the dynamics of using a steel conker would be noticeably different from those of an actual conker. Murphy pointed out that with the weight of a steel conker being 10 times more than the real one, an experienced judge would easily spot any discrepancy in the swing. Murphy confidently expressed his skepticism about Jakins using any foul methods due to the solid friendship they have maintained over three decades at the competition.
The controversy surrounding the tournament has not only affected Jakins but has also blemished the experience for others, including Johnson-Ferguson, Jakins’s competitor. Originally, Johnson-Ferguson was reported to have filed a complaint against Jakins. After a statement by Jim Packer, the chairman of the event, which dubbed him a “sore loser,” Johnson-Ferguson clarified his position. He assured that he harbored no bitterness against Jakins nor the tournament and maintained that the controversy had spoiled an otherwise enjoyable event.
The results of the investigation into the allegations against Jakins are pending at the time of writing.
