Halifax Mayor Mike Savage has been appointed as the new lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, following an announcement by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Savage, who has served as mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality for 12 years, is known for his advocacy for social inclusion, disability rights, economic growth, and climate change action. Prior to his time as mayor, Savage was a Liberal member of Parliament representing Dartmouth and Cole Harbour for seven years. His appointment comes as he announced he would not be running for another term in the upcoming municipal election.

Savage will be taking over the role from Lt.-Gov. Arthur LeBlanc, a former Supreme Court of Nova Scotia justice who has been serving as the lieutenant-governor since 2017. The lieutenant-governor is appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the prime minister and is responsible for granting royal assent to provincial laws as the representative for the Crown. Trudeau praised Savage as a passionate public servant and experienced leader who will continue to serve Nova Scotians well in his new role. The timing of Savage’s appointment coincides with Halifax’s upcoming mayoral election on October 19, where a new mayor will be elected.

The appointment of Mike Savage as the new lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia is seen as a recognition of his dedication to public service and leadership in the community. Throughout his time as mayor of Halifax, Savage has been a vocal advocate for various important issues, including social inclusion, disability rights, economic growth, and climate change action. His background as a former member of Parliament also brings valuable political experience to his new role as lieutenant-governor. In accepting this new position, Savage will be stepping away from municipal politics after serving as mayor for over a decade.

As the lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, Savage will be responsible for representing the Crown and granting royal assent to provincial laws. This role requires a deep understanding of the legislative process and a commitment to upholding the interests of the province and its residents. Trudeau’s endorsement of Savage as a capable and passionate leader reflects the confidence placed in him to fulfill the duties of the position effectively. Savage’s appointment represents a significant milestone in his career and a new chapter in his ongoing dedication to public service in Nova Scotia.

The transition from mayor to lieutenant-governor marks a new era for Mike Savage as he prepares to take on a different set of responsibilities and challenges in his public service career. His tenure as mayor of Halifax has been characterized by his commitment to advocating for important issues and making a positive impact on the community. As he steps into his new role as lieutenant-governor, Savage will have the opportunity to continue serving Nova Scotians in a different capacity, bringing his leadership skills and dedication to the position. The upcoming mayoral election in Halifax will mark the culmination of Savage’s time as mayor and the beginning of a new chapter in his career in public service.
