Police who defended the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 criticize Trump for defending insurrectionists.

Police officers injured during the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot have publicly criticized former President Donald Trump for praising and supporting rioters convicted of attacking the Capitol. Former Capitol Police Sgt. Aquilino Gonell and D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Daniel Hodges spoke out against Trump at a news conference hosted by President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. Gonell and Hodges condemned Trump’s focus on “law and order” while also expressing support for individuals who attempted to overturn democracy and assaulted police officers. They strongly denounced Trump’s actions as a betrayal of leadership, noting his conflicting messages and his salute to a song recorded by Jan. 6 convicts.

The Biden campaign seized on Trump’s actions and statements, denouncing his rhetoric and behaviors as promoting violence and authoritarianism. The campaign addressed a video shared by Trump featuring a hog-tied Biden painted on a pickup truck, which they interpreted as suggestive of physical harm to the president. Biden campaign spokesman Michael Tyler condemned Trump for perpetuating political violence and highlighted his consistent support for the Jan. 6 rioters as “unbelievable patriots.” This news conference was part of the broader strategy by the Biden campaign to draw attention to Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and his unwavering defense of those involved in the Capitol riot.

Gonell and Hodges have been vocal critics of Trump and the Republican Party for their attempts to downplay and whitewash the events of January 6. Gonell, who suffered injuries during the riot that led to his retirement in 2022, has blamed Trump for the violence and chaos that occurred that day. He described his experience of fighting off the mob of Trump supporters as resembling a medieval battle and expressed frustration towards those who continue to spread conspiracy theories about the events at the Capitol. Gonell holds Trump accountable for the injuries he sustained during the riot and believes that the former president played a significant role in inciting the violence.

In addition to the criticism from Gonell and Hodges, Trump’s rhetoric and attacks against a federal judge in New York have raised concerns within Congress and the judiciary. Another federal judge from Washington publicly rebuked Trump for his comments about his New York colleague, emphasizing the importance of judges being able to carry out their duties without the fear of physical harm or threats. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton expressed alarm at the potential consequences of Trump’s remarks and highlighted the necessity of upholding the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. Trump’s pattern of violent rhetoric and attacks against institutions and individuals has sparked unease and condemnation from various sectors of society.

Overall, the news conference featuring Gonell and Hodges, along with the response from the Biden campaign and the judiciary, reflects a broader concern over Trump’s divisive rhetoric, promotion of violence, and continued support for individuals involved in the Capitol riot. The events of January 6 continue to reverberate within the political landscape, highlighting the need for accountability, transparency, and a commitment to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law. The voices of those directly impacted by the violence and chaos of that day play a crucial role in shaping the ongoing discourse and responses to the events that unfolded at the Capitol.
