Co-founder of Robinhood Aims to Launch Hundreds of Solar Panels into Space

The rapid decline in solar power prices has led to a surge in renewable energy, but the space required for solar farms is a concern. To combat this issue, billionaire Baiju Bhatt is working on a project called Aetherflux to build solar panels in space and beam the power back to Earth. This idea, reminiscent of sci-fi concepts, aims to create resilient infrastructure that can withstand conditions on the ground.

Space-based solar power is not a new idea, but recent advancements in technology and lower launch costs have revitalized interest in the concept. Companies like Virtus Solis, Space Solar, and Reflect Orbital are planning to launch solar panels into high orbit to constantly receive sunlight and beam the energy back to Earth. Aetherflux, on the other hand, plans to use infrared lasers to deliver power, which would require smaller and more cost-effective satellites.

Aetherflux’s satellites would orbit the planet every 90 minutes, leveraging batteries charged by solar panels to provide continuous power delivery. By utilizing existing tools and off-the-shelf satellites, the company aims to make its vision a reality without waiting for major breakthroughs. Bhatt’s background in physics and passion for space exploration have driven him to pursue this project, which he plans to fund initially from his own wealth.

While the company’s first mission is set for 2025, scaling the project will require significant external funding, possibly from the private sector or government sources like the Department of Defense. The potential applications for space-based power generation are vast, including powering remote military bases and supporting operations in challenging environments like mining sites. Bhatt believes that orbital infrastructure will play a crucial role in shaping the future of space exploration and life on Earth in the next decade.

As the world transitions to a new era of space exploration, Bhatt sees Aetherflux as a pioneer in leveraging orbital resources to address challenges on Earth. The company’s innovative approach to space-based solar power could revolutionize the way we think about energy production and distribution. With a vision to prove the benefits of in-orbit infrastructure, Aetherflux is poised to make a significant impact on the clean energy landscape in the coming years.
