One year since the Hamas incursion into Israel which sparked a devastating year of war in Gaza, European leaders have expressed their condolences and calls for peace. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the Hamas attacks, which led to the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and the hostage-taking of 250 others. She called the attacks “unspeakable savagery” and stressed the need for a ceasefire and the unconditional release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with the European Union committed to providing financial assistance and aid to the Palestinian people.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also expressed regret over the suffering and deaths on both sides of the conflict, blaming Hamas for triggering the catastrophe in Gaza with their attack on Israel. He echoed calls for a ceasefire to protect the civilian population and provide better care for those affected by the ongoing violence. Pope Francis prayed for peace and justice in the region, appealing to the Virgin Mary to intervene and end the wars and injustices plaguing the area. More reactions from European leaders are expected as the anniversary is commemorated.

On the ground, Israeli military strikes in northern Gaza have continued, with a new air and ground offensive announced in Jabaliya, a site of a refugee camp dating back to the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation. Israel has called for the evacuation of northern Gaza, prompting thousands to flee the area amidst heavy Israeli strikes. Palestinian authorities reported at least 19 people killed in an attack on a central mosque in Gaza, while Israeli authorities have heightened security measures in preparation for anniversary memorials for the victims of the initial Hamas attacks on Israel. The ongoing violence and devastation in Gaza continue to escalate.

European leaders have denounced the Hamas incursion into Israel and subsequent war in Gaza, with calls for peace, ceasefire, and humanitarian aid to the affected population. The European Union and individual countries like Germany are committed to providing support and assistance to the Palestinians. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with ongoing Israeli military strikes leading to further casualties and destruction. Calls for an end to the violence and injustices in the region continue to be expressed by world leaders, including Pope Francis, who prayed for peace and justice in the region. The anniversary of the Hamas incursion has brought renewed attention to the conflict and the need for a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
