Chinese Communist Party Celebrates 75 Years of Power Despite Lingering Economic and Security Challenges

China recently marked the 75th year of Communist Party rule with limited celebrations, such as a flag-raising ceremony and an honor guard march. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on the anniversary, emphasizing the longstanding relationship between the two countries. Despite economic challenges and security threats, China showcased its progress and stability through state-controlled media reports. The milestone also saw commemorations in Hong Kong and Macao, showcasing Beijing’s determination to overcome a “Century of Humiliation.”

In recent decades, China’s military parades and economic displays were held only at the turn of decades, indicating the country’s growing strength and resolve. However, the world’s second-largest economy has struggled to regain momentum following the COVID-19 pandemic. A property slump has affected various sectors of the economy, prompting the government to announce measures like lower interest rates and smaller down payment requirements for mortgages. Xi Jinping has remained focused on domestic issues, purging officials deemed disloyal or corrupt while emphasizing the importance of unity and progress for the Chinese people.

The anniversary coincides with growing tensions between China and its neighbors over territorial disputes and relationships with the United States. China’s claims in the South China Sea and its military build-up have raised concerns about potential conflicts in the region. Domestically, Xi has solidified his leadership by eliminating term limits and extending his influence over key government bodies. With no competitive elections and strict control over the media, China continues to operate under Communist Party rule.

Putin’s congratulatory message to Xi highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Russia and China, with China pledging to expand cooperation between the two nations. This anniversary comes at a critical time for China, as it faces various challenges both domestically and internationally. Despite these obstacles, Xi remains optimistic about the future and the Chinese people’s ability to overcome difficulties. As China looks towards the future, it will continue to navigate complex global relationships and strive for economic growth and stability under Communist Party rule.
