New Jersey Democratic House candidate expresses little concern over biological men in women’s locker rooms

Sue Altman, a Democrat running for the U.S. House in New Jersey, shared her views on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports at a town hall event in Phillipsburg. Altman, who has a background in basketball, expressed support for transgender individuals being allowed to compete on women’s sports teams. She emphasized the importance of giving young children the opportunity to participate in sports and be part of a team, regardless of gender identity. Altman stated that as an advocate for women’s rights and sports, she believes the focus should be on issues such as equal access to resources and fair treatment, rather than excluding transgender individuals from participating in sports.

Altman’s opponent, Republican incumbent Rep. Tom Kean, has previously voted in favor of legislation to protect women’s only athletics. The debate over transgender athletes’ participation in women’s sports has gained attention in recent years, with concerns raised about the competitive advantage that transgender women may have over biological women. Studies have shown that transgender women athletes may retain some advantages even after undergoing hormone therapy. Altman acknowledged the significance of girls’ sports and the challenges that individuals transitioning between genders may face during adolescence. She emphasized the need to respect individuals of all genders and provide opportunities for young people, especially those struggling with gender identity, to participate in sports.

The issue of transgender athletes in women’s sports has divided public opinion, with a Gallup survey showing an increase in the percentage of Americans who believe athletes should play on teams corresponding to their biological sex. The survey also indicated a shift in views among Democrats, with more individuals supporting athletes competing based on their biological sex rather than gender identity in recent years. Altman highlighted the importance of giving adolescents struggling with gender identity the chance to participate in sports and compete, while also recognizing the concerns surrounding fairness and inclusion in women’s sports. She stressed the need to respect individuals of all genders and allow sport committees to make decisions regarding high-level competitions.

Altman’s stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports aligns with her values as a former leader of New Jersey’s progressive Working Families Party and her background in advocating for women’s rights. She emphasized the need to prioritize equal access to resources, fair treatment, and opportunities for young athletes, while also respecting the diversity of gender identities. The upcoming election in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, where Altman is running against Rep. Kean, will play a crucial role in shaping policies related to transgender athletes in women’s sports. The controversy surrounding the issue underscores the complex challenges faced by policymakers, athletes, and the broader public in balancing fairness, inclusion, and respect for diversity in sports. Altman’s perspective offers a nuanced approach that seeks to balance these competing interests and promote equitable opportunities for all athletes, regardless of gender identity.
