“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its 50th season with a star-studded lineup of former co-stars, including Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg as her husband Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden. The cold open featured a mock rally with Rudolph’s Harris urging people to stay focused and end the drama before inviting the rest of the cast onstage for the iconic opening line. The return of Rudolph as Harris, along with surprise appearances from Carvey, Samberg, and comedian Jim Gaffigan, added to the excitement of the season premiere.

Guest host Jean Smart, fresh off her sixth Emmy win, expressed her long-standing desire to host “Saturday Night Live” in her opening monologue. The show paid tribute to its origins with references to the debut episode in 1975, including the original cast members and musical guests. Country singer and rapper Jelly Roll made his debut as the musical guest, performing his songs “Liar” and “Sober” alongside Smart and the cast. The episode marked a celebration of the show’s legacy as it approaches its 50th anniversary.

Despite the star-studded guest appearances, the regular cast members took the spotlight for much of the episode. James Austin Johnson returned as Donald Trump, Colin Jost and Michael Che resumed their roles on “Weekend Update,” and the show settled into its regular routine. The upcoming lineup of hosts and musical guests promises a diverse range of talent, leading up to a three-hour primetime special in February. The season is expected to feature a variety of stars who have graced the “SNL” stage over the years, including Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, and Tina Fey.

The energy of the season premiere set the stage for a milestone celebration of “Saturday Night Live’s” 50th season. With a mix of beloved former cast members and new talent, the show continues to entertain and reflect on its rich history. The combination of political satire, musical performances, and iconic skits keeps audiences engaged and eager for more. The upcoming episodes are sure to capture the essence of the show’s legacy while highlighting the talents of both the cast and guest hosts. The excitement surrounding the 50th season serves as a reminder of “Saturday Night Live’s” enduring influence on comedy and pop culture.
