Why Coldplay’s 12th album will be their final one, according to Chris Martin

Chris Martin revealed in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that Coldplay will only be releasing two more “proper” albums. The band’s tenth album, “Moon Music,” is set to be released on October 4th. Martin explained that they have decided to limit themselves to 12 albums for the sake of quality control, citing examples like the “Harry Potter” books and the musical output of artists they admire with a similar number of albums.

The band wants to focus on quality over quantity, with Martin stating that having a limit of 12 albums ensures that the quality control remains high. He emphasized the importance of continually trying to improve rather than coasting. Despite the decision to stop producing new music after their twelfth album, Martin reassured fans that he will continue creating music in some form, but the Coldplay project has a special place for him.

Looking ahead to after album number 12, Martin mentioned the possibility of working on something different creatively beyond touring, such as side projects or compilations of unfinished work. He highlighted logistical challenges that arise with time as a factor in the decision to limit the band’s output. Martin expressed a desire for the other members of Coldplay to have more freedom in their lives as they get older, without feeling pressured to continue creating music together.

Despite setting a deadline for themselves, Martin noted that the band has more joy than ever, citing factors such as getting older, experiencing COVID, being grateful for their opportunities, and the slow pace at which they are proceeding. He pointed out that the band still loves what they do because of the positive impact music has on people, the inspiration they get from different places and experiences, and the sense of optimism that music brings in challenging times.

In conclusion, Martin’s announcement that Coldplay will only be releasing two more albums due to quality control and logistical reasons signals a shift in the band’s creative process. While the decision may disappoint some fans who were hoping for more music, Martin’s focus on ensuring that the band continues to produce high-quality work is a testament to their commitment to their craft. Despite the limited number of albums left, Martin’s reassurance that he will continue creating music in some form offers hope for future projects from one of the most iconic bands in music history.
