Death toll rises to 38 in Nepal due to floods and landslides

At least 38 people have lost their lives in Nepal due to heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides. The death toll is expected to rise, with 29 individuals reported missing. Most casualties occurred in Kathmandu Valley, the country’s capital, bringing normal activities to a halt. Rescue operations involving helicopters and rubber boats have been underway to assist those stranded on rooftops or elevated ground. The region experienced up to 322.2mm of rainfall within a day, leading to overflowing rivers and blocked roads and bridges.

Authorities have been working to clear debris and reopen roads in the wake of 28 landslides that have obstructed highways. The heavy downpour is attributed to the delayed retreat of South Asia’s annual monsoon rains, exacerbated by a low-pressure system over neighboring India. Weather forecasts suggest that the rainfall may persist until Sunday, after which conditions are expected to improve. Moderate to extremely heavy rainfall has been witnessed in central and eastern areas, with moderate levels in other regions. While international flights continue to operate, domestic flights have faced disruptions.

The Koshi River in the southeast region of Nepal is flowing above the danger level, posing a threat to neighboring India’s Bihar state. The river’s current flow rate of 450,000 cusecs far exceeds the normal rate of 150,000 cusecs, indicating a rising water level. With the river still swelling, officials are closely monitoring the situation. The monsoon season in Nepal witnesses frequent landslides and flash floods, leading to numerous fatalities each year. Since mid-June, a total of 254 people have died and 65 individuals remain missing due to such natural disasters.

The devastating impact of the ongoing heavy rainfall has resulted in major disruptions to normal life in Nepal. The persistent downpours have caused chaos in the Kathmandu Valley, with traffic brought to a standstill and emergency rescue efforts in full swing. The excessive rainfall has caused rivers to burst their banks, resulting in floodwater spilling over onto roads and bridges. With the unpredictable weather conditions expected to last until Sunday, the authorities are on high alert to combat the effects of this natural disaster that has claimed numerous lives.

Efforts are being made to mitigate the dangers posed by the landslides and flooding that have affected many parts of the Himalayan nation. Despite the challenges posed by blocked highways and disrupted air travel, rescue workers are tirelessly working to provide assistance to those in distress. The severity of the situation is compounded by the rising water levels in the Koshi River, which could potentially lead to more flooding in neighboring regions. As the monsoon season continues to wreak havoc in Nepal, it is imperative for authorities and rescue teams to remain vigilant and provide support to those affected by these natural calamities.
