Southwest Airlines is undergoing a major transformation in the next two years, including red-eye flights, assigned seating, and a redesign of its interior cabins. The changes are considered a significant shift for the airline, with new features such as seat trays, device trays, charging ports, and premium seating with extra legroom being added to refurbished planes. Southwest plans to start booking flights with assigned seats in the second half of 2025 and expects the redesigned cabins to be available at that time pending FAA approval.

Southwest CEO Bob Jordan highlighted that customers are seeking premium options, especially for longer flights, and the extra legroom can be valuable to travelers. The airline is aiming to meet the evolving needs of passengers and enhance its profitability by offering updated features and amenities. These changes were discussed at an investor meeting in Dallas where executives emphasized the importance of adapting to changing consumer preferences and flight experiences.
