The aftermath of Hurricane Helene led to mass flooding across the southern US, resulting in thousands of rescue missions being carried out by police officers, firefighters, National Guard members, and others. The dramatic scene at Unicoi County Hospital in Tennessee saw patients and staff being trapped by rising floodwaters, ultimately leading to dozens of them being airlifted to safety from the hospital’s roof. Despite the treacherous conditions brought about by the storm surge and heavy rain, all individuals were successfully rescued within a few hours.

In Florida, 1,500 search-and-rescue personnel were concentrated on securing and stabilizing affected communities after Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm on the Northwest Florida coast. The storm created widespread flooding from storm surge along the state’s Gulf Coast, resulting in numerous rescues of people trapped in their homes by rising water. Unfortunately, at least five people died in Pinellas County, with residents ignoring evacuation warnings and facing life-threatening situations.

The storm surge in Pinellas County reached unprecedented levels of 8 feet, leading some residents to seek shelter in attics as the water rose. Many residents failed to heed evacuation warnings due to false information from others claiming the surge wouldn’t be severe. Similarly, Hillsborough County experienced extensive rescues, including a 97-year-old woman and her daughter, a woman stranded in a flooded car, and multiple people in need of assistance due to the rising waters.

In the Tampa Bay area, large-scale rescues were carried out by the sheriff’s office, including a 97-year-old woman with dementia and her daughter, among others who required help fleeing their flooded homes. Additionally, the Coast Guard conducted multiple rescues at sea, saving boaters and their pets who were stranded in the Gulf during the storm. The swift-water rescues in North Carolina due to Helene’s rains caused massive flooding and numerous landslides, leading to Governor Roy Cooper urging residents to prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary travel.

Governor Brian Kemp in Georgia reported over 115 homes being trapped by flooding caused by Helene’s rains, particularly in the Hanover West neighborhood in north Atlanta. Emergency personnel carried out various rescues of residents from their flooded homes, showcasing the widespread impact of the storm on communities across the southern US. With the combined efforts of local, state, and federal rescue teams, numerous lives were saved amid the chaos and devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, highlighting the resilience and dedication of first responders in times of crisis.
