As a heart surgeon, these are the 4 habits I always steer clear of

Dr. Jeremy London, a heart surgeon in Savannah, Georgia, has shared advice on maintaining good health by avoiding certain bad habits. As a cardiothoracic surgeon for 25 years, he has learned that refraining from smoking or vaping, using alcohol-based mouthwash, consuming processed foods, and drinking alcohol are all crucial for overall health. He emphasizes that it is important to make decisions that prioritize one’s own well-being.

London highlights the negative impact of smoking on the body, stating that it directly injures the lining of blood vessels, increases the risk of atherosclerosis, blockages, and cancer. An estimated 28 million American adults smoke cigarettes, which is the leading cause of lung cancer worldwide. A recent report from the American Cancer Society linked smoking to 20% of US cancer cases and almost 30% of cancer deaths, underscoring the severe health risks associated with this habit.

The use of alcohol-based mouthwash is another habit that London advises against due to its negative impact on the gut microbiome. He explains that the good bacteria in the mouth play a crucial role in gut health, nutrient absorption, and blood pressure regulation. Research has shown that daily use of alcohol-based mouthwash can disrupt the delicate balance of these beneficial bacteria, potentially leading to issues such as high blood pressure and other health complications.

Consuming processed foods is another habit that London warns against, emphasizing that the nutrients we ingest directly impact the health of every cell in our bodies. Ultra-processed foods that are high in calories, sugar, fat, and salt have been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, cancer, and early death. London suggests being mindful of one’s nutritional intake and opting for whole foods such as grass-fed beef, chicken, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats to support overall well-being.

London also addresses the consumption of alcohol, noting that even moderate use may have negative effects on the body. When alcohol is processed by the body, it is broken down into acetaldehyde and acetate, both of which can be harmful to cells. While some studies have suggested potential benefits of red wine in moderation, recent research has cast doubt on the overall health benefits of alcohol consumption, highlighting its potential risks to health.

In conclusion, Dr. Jeremy London’s advice emphasizes the importance of making healthy choices to protect one’s well-being. By avoiding habits such as smoking, using alcohol-based mouthwash, consuming processed foods, and drinking alcohol, individuals can promote better health outcomes and reduce their risk of chronic diseases. London’s insights serve as a reminder to prioritize self-care and make decisions that support long-term health and vitality.
